Forget “The Amazing Spider-Man.” And if you haven’t seen “Marvel’s The Avengers” yet, you might as well wait to see it when it comes on DVD.
This Friday will mark the end of an era; the Christopher Nolan’s Batman series era. Batman will fight his last villan in this kickass, action-packed thriller that is sure to not disappoint.
It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.. — (C) Warner Bros.
Starring returning cast members Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne aka Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as James Gordon, and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, “The Dark Knight Rises” introduces three new characters, Bane, Portrayed by Tom Hardy, Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, and John Blake, portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
In addition, Cillian Murphy will be reprising his role as Jonathan Crane, who was in “Batman Begins,” not “The Dark Knight.”
Although I do expect “The Dark Knight Rises” to be one of the Summer’s box office hits, I” still not sure how it will do in comparison to “The Dark Knight.” Since this will be the last Batman movie (by Christopher Nolan anyway), I kind of expect “The Dark Knight Rises” to be more successful than “The Dark Knight.”
But then again, for me, what really made “The Dark Knight” such a great movie were the amazing actors that brought the characters to life. With “The Dark Knight Rises,” some of those same actors are returning, but there are some additions. And I’m just curious to find out if the new actors can leave up to the expectations of the roles they’re portraying.
Hardy (“Inception”), Hathaway (“The Devil Wears Prada”) and Gordon-Levitt (“Inception” as well) are all great actors, so I don’t expect them to do a bad job. In fact, I expect them to do a pretty damn good job, especially since I’ve seen some of the other movies they’ve been in before “The Dark Knight Rises.”
I haven’t seen “The Dark Knight Rises” yet and I know it will never happen, but I will always wonder how different this movie would be if Heath Ledger were still with us. He did a phenomenal job as the Joker, and he was one our greatest, youngest actors. If he had lived, he sure would have been in a couple dozen movies by now with a handful of awards. He was THAT good.
Well, it looks like my Summer started with “Marvel’s The Avengers,” and it’s about to end with “The Dark Knight Rises.”
If you ask me, this is one hell of a Summer.
